James Vincent McMorrow
James Vincent McMorrow is a musician from Dublin, Ireland and from my recent listening to his first album released in January of this year, and my viewings of his live performances, I would classify him as a man filled with the essence of traditional american folk music. While this is true McMorrow notes some influences from Donny Hathaway, Otis Redding, Joan Baez, Neil Young, Band of Horses, The National and Sufjan Stevens, on the grounds of his absolutely haunting falsetto voice. McMorrow's debut album Early In The Morning was released in January comprised of eleven songs, the album was laced throughout with haunting melodies, and a beautiful musical structure that innovates on the classic american folk style.
James first began to develop his unique style of song writing in college when he started playing the drums, his musical taste started with hardcore music, he lists At The Drive In, Refused, and Glassjaw. It was later as James began to play the piano, and describes himself playing various notes and attempting to sing them until successful for three years. James only began writing music within the last four years, James' recording style is that to be compared to Bon Iver. As Bon Iver recorded their entire debut album For Emma, Forever Ago secluded in a cottage for six months, James recorded the entirety of his album Early In The Morning in the seclusion of a cottage by the sea for a total of six months. James played all the instruments on the album which is a huge feat that that requires extraordinary musical talent not found in the likes of most.
James has a specific style of writing that uses a dark sound with beautiful fantasy lyrics. James is an accomplished artist in Ireland Early In The Morning reached number one on the countries charts on itunes during the time of release in March 2010 and i cannot wait to see more from him in the near future.
Here is my favorite video I have found of James his passion displayed during every song is enchanting and sends chills through me each time I watch him enter a sort of trance as he plays the chorus of Old Dark Machine in the beginning of the video.
