The Gorillaz

This band is easily one of the biggest game changers in music.  It all started off with two guys watching MTV and thinking how boring it was. In all honesty, they weren't just a random pair, the (lead singer/ keyboarder/ whatever crazy hand instrument they could decide to integrate into there music guy),  Damon Albarn was also the guitarist for the group Blur, who if they wanted to could have become one of the biggest groups of all time, but the onset of fame sadly broke them up (however since 2008 have been doing some reunion tours).  One of Blur's songs will be attached below so you can get a taste of how cool they are.  Anyway, back to the story, Damon and his friend Jamie Hewlett (who was his roommate at the time) were watching MTV and decided that it should be spiced up, so they decided, "Hey lets make a cartoon band!"  So they did.

Their first album was a self-titled masterpiece.  It includes three of their greatest songs (in my opinion): Clint Eastwood, Rock the House, and 19-2000.  The album, and as a result the Gorillaz, exploded. It sold seven million copies; they played at the Brit Awards (in which they were nominated for six categories) using their call card 3-D animations, (which also got them a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most successful virtual band) and brought the house down.

Now, the reason I say that they are one of the biggest game changing bands is because they are so unique.  No one can copy their sound; they are much like Radiohead in that way.  When we start to analyze the music then it's possible to see how genius Damon really is.  Let's take, just for an example, their song "Dirty Hairy."  It has so many different variables that make it great; the beginning of the song starts with a synth riff, which by itself covers several different styles.  Its got a bit of classic rock, some funk, pop, electro, and I don't know if this is the same for everyone but I feel that it also has an oriental feel.  Point is, it catches your ears.  After all of this, it turns into a kind of hip-hop beat with a chorus of childrens voices, and then it goes into a classical themed violin solo, which they pair with the incredible rapping skills of Del Tha Funkee Homosapian.  It is ridiculous to think of how they put this together, such polar opposite sounds, with such diverse backgrounds, are used to create a song, and a solid one at that. The first week it was released, the track "Dirty Harry" hit #6 on the charts.  This is just one song taken apart, and only to a degree.  Other songs of theirs are just as incredible though; "Clint Eastwood," which is perhaps their biggest song, is just as great as Dirty Harry, but for the complete opposite reasons.  This song is so simple that it can be explained by two phrases: one - a catchy melody, and two - tight rapping, and that's all it needs.

Lastly I will talk about the visual elements, which is another factor that sets them apart from other artists. Their animations and characters were first invented by Damon's roommate, Jamie Hewlett.  They both thought it would be more fun if a band used cartoons because in concert it would constantly keep the crowd entertained.  This worked flawlessly, and consequentially they set themselves apart from other acts as well as revolutionizing both the visual, and musical world of live music and setting the stage for future artists.
