Elliot Smith

"Say Yes" by the late Elliot Smith is an uplifting song that truly brightens the mood of the listener.  Elliot Smith was an incredible lyricist that had the ability to capture the essence of the moment and give his audience the chance to embody that feeling. With his short and "poppy" style, he keeps the song fresh and light, which provides a sonorous flow to carry his message. His use of the common 7th major scale mixed with his experimental use of harmonization gives us a wonderful melody that pleases us with a general sense of satisfaction as the song culminates.

Born in the high plains of Nebraska and brought up in the surroundings of Oregon, Smith gave rise to his musical career through various gigs and events in Portland. People were amazed by his versatility and his desire to experiment in his music, which is evident in many of his tracks including "Say Yes". Smith was often known for his soft delivery and his utilization of digital tracks and vocal layers to create complex textures and harmonies. He was an advocate for using modern technology in a period where people were just beginning to comprehend the possibilities and benefits. Smith continued his career in obscurity until he made his first appearance on a Network Televsion debut on the Late Night With Connan O'Brien. This began a new path for his career and greatly expanded his fan base. The climax of his musical career came to a peak when he was asked to perform "Miss Misery" at the Oscars in 1998. Although he did not win an Oscar, Smith was taken aback but what he felt from the surrealism of the experience. Both tracks are, simply put, beautiful. Check him out
