Bon Iver

Bon Iver is a band formed in 2007 known for its blending harmonies, falsetto, serene tone, and successful use of autotune in the song "Woods" on their Blood Bank EP. The band consists of Justin Vernon as songwriter/singer (although every member sings), Sean Carey on the drums/piano, Michael Noyce playing guitar, and Matthew McCaughan playing the bass and drums. They released their first album, "For Emma, Forever Ago" which was immediately praised and received Album of the Month awards from several magazines. The quiet music offers wonderful minimalism and verses that flow like poetry.
On "For Emma, Forever Ago" I was struck particularly by "Skinny Love" and "Flume." Although you could hear a break up song from just about anyone, "Skinny Love" stands out by the poetic lyrics. The song is about an unbalanced relationship which is about to collapse and in one line he writes "pour a little salt we were never here," a particularly beautiful metaphor to Vernon trying to save the relationship. "Flume" flows by smoothly and is one of those songs that impacts you less if you interpret it heavily in my opinion.
Bon Iver has had more big releases in 2009 and more recently 2011. Check out Bon Iver because the band is a very important influence in the Indie Folk world. "Flume" and "Skinny Love" are posted below.
